The festival is observed for various reasons and celebrated differently in various parts of Indian subcontinent.

1. In the eastern and north-eastern states of India, Dussehra marks the end of Durga Puja. This day is celebrated to commemorate the triumph of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon, Mahishasura.

2. In the other parts of India, the festival is synonymously called Dussehra. The day is observed to celebrate the triumph of Lord Rama over Ravana, the victory of Good over evil.

In Rajasthan, this day is marked as a National holiday. The festival is celebrated by towering effigies of 10 headed- Ravana, symbolizing 5 vices in men and women - desire, anger, greed, affection and ego. Burning the evil with fireworks marks the destruction of the vices within mankind.
